Utah Eocene Fossil Insects and Plants ~ Home Page ~

These web pages are dedicated to sharing with the general public images and information about some fossilized insects and plants from the Eocene era in Utah.

All specimens were collected from an exposure of the Parachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation, located in the northeast corner of the state of Utah, U.S.A. This formation dates from the Middle to Late Eocene, approximately 45 million before the present.

The fossils were preserved between deposits of extremely fine grained volcanic ashes and river silts which have hardened into multilayered "shales". Excellent detail is common, due to the fine grained nature of the sediments. We expose the fossils by splitting the shale along its bedding planes.

These are imprints of plants and insects, preserved by fine grained sediments, and highlighted by the carbon traces from their own bodies.

This web site will contain information about the Parachute Member of the Green River Formation in Utah, our collecting methods, links to web pages with similar subject matter, book references and more.

Collecting dates were May 1999 and June 2000.
